A longtime philanthropist and humanitarian, Lois Pope has dedicated much of her life to founding and leading nonprofit organizations geared toward supporting populations in need. Among Lois Pope’s numerous projects and commitments is the Leaders In Furthering Education (LIFE) Foundation, which strives to equip individuals with the tools they need to succeed and to improve the quality of life for families experiencing financial hardships. Lois Pope’s LIFE Foundation also promotes humanitarianism through programs that encourage youth to engage in community leadership and development.
In conducting the activities of the LIFE Foundation, Lois Pope reached young children through the LIFE Summer Camp Program. Based in Florida, the program raised funds to send children from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as those with special needs to summer day camps. At these camps, children who might otherwise be left to their own devices without supervision during the summer enjoyed the opportunity to play and socialize in a safe and entertaining environment.
Over the course of the program, Lois Pope’s LIFE Summer Camp generated enough funding to send more than 15,000 children to summer camp. Children attending these camps with the sponsorship of the LIFE Foundation were from Florida households that fell below the national poverty level. Through Lois Pope’s LIFE Summer Camp Program, these young individuals exercised, learned, and laughed among others their age, under the watchful eye of caring adults.
In addition to helping children through the LIFE Foundation Summer Camp Program, Lois Pope champions the appreciation and acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by America’s disabled veterans through the Disabled Veterans’ LIFE Memorial Foundation. Founded in 1998, the Foundation has tirelessly spearheaded efforts to raise money for the erection and endowment of the nation’s first memorial in Washington, D.C., to honor the more than 3 million men and women who sustained permanent injury or disability in the line of duty.
